Staying on task....

I have a problem sometimes with keeping myself on task and not getting distracted. Now that I'm working at home two days a week can sometimes be a problem, but I've figured out a secret. Of course I have the usual tricks and suggestions such as setting my alarm and working for one hour then breaking, coffee, or reward based systems, but my newest and most successful idea to date is this:

Dirty old cons. Well, any shoes for that matter, although I find those with laces seem to work the best, that way I can't accidently slip them off under my workbench. I find that if I get up in the morning, get dressed and put my shoes straight on then I feel in much more of a working mood, as oppose to long weekend lazing around mood, and there is that extra little thing between getting back into bed or snuggling up in front of the TV.

What weird and wonderful things do other people have to keep them on task?

  1. I'm pretty terrible at this. Usually I just have to force myself to start work as soon as possible, or else I procrastinate for ages...

I did read one bit of advice where a person running a small business from home, would after breakfast, change clothes and walk to the mail box. Walking back up to her front door was her way of saying "I'm going to work now"...

  2. That's great!

My trick is to get up, have a shower, and get dressed. Just as if I were going to my desk job. When I had a day off to work the other week I meant to actually leave the house. But I got distracted...

An old writing teacher of mine once said to me that if you're going to work from home, you should still get dressed as if you were going to your usual job (so, in my case, into office-gear) so you're in the right frame of mind.

I love that you need laces on your shoes to get into that frame of mind. :)

  3. You're pretty much spot on, Kate! Reward system work magic with me but the get dressed part really help set me up to work at home.

    Great Post!

    BTW - I'm a Converse freak ... got 7 pairs of them! :D

  4. It's me again! Got distracted ...

I also want to say that I apprecite your words of advice while I'm going through a bad patch, so again THANK YOU!

Hope that I'll be back on track in a week or two ... :D
